Winona Laura Horowitz who is professionally known as Winona Ryder was born in Winona Minnesota. She was named by parents for the town in which she was born. Both her father Michel Horowitz, and mother Cynthia Palmer are authors and editors. Ryder is Jewish. Ryder believes that her father was from her Jewish heritage. She has a younger brother Uria as well as two half siblings Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder's family relocated from Mendocino County to California when she was just seven years old. aged. In 1983, when she was 12 years old, Ryder took up a place at the American Conservatory Theatre to take acting classes. She received nominations for two Academy Awards one for her role as a character in The Age of Innocence (1993).
